2024 4-H Photo Show
On display May 16 – June 2, 2024
Opening Reception Thursday, May 16, 2024 • 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Holter Museum of Art
Open to everyone, we will have a 4-H photography workshop on Thursday, May 2, 2024. We’ll review images and answer any questions about the Photo Show. This meeting is open to all 4-H’ers, regardless of whether you are enrolled in the 4-H photography project or not.
This is a Lewis & Clark County 4-H event— 4-H members who are not enrolled in the Photography project may also participate in the Photo Show. This is an exhibition and showcase, and not a judged event. Photo submissions must represent the stated theme of “purpose” and must conform to the technical requirements of display and framing. They must also include caption information submitted to Luke Duran, photography superintendent in advance. See submission details below:
Note: submissions that do not follow the guidelines and submission requirements will not be accepted or displayed.
Requirements to participate in the Photo Show:
- 4-H Photography and non-photography project members may exhibit only one image in the Photo Show.
- 4-H Photography members must be in attendance during the Opening Reception on May 16, and available to talk with the public as they walk through the exhibit. The reception will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
- Lewis & Clark County 4-H members who are not enrolled in the 4-H Photography project may also display one photo in the exhibit, provided it is submitted in time, properly formatted and adheres to the theme and subject of this show (details below). A caption must also be emailed to Luke in advance. Non-photography members who participate in the Photo Show are also encouraged to attend the Opening Reception.
2024 Photo Show Theme
We hope the 4-H Photo Show accomplishes four goals:
- Showcase the work and talent of 4-H photographers
- Connect the community to 4-H
- Tell the story of 4-H through 4-H members’ eyes and imagination, and demonstrates the 4-H experiential model of “learn by doing.”
- Documents the work and progress of 4-H’ers working on the “Purpose” project
“Photography with a Purpose”
The 2024 Photo Show is an exhibition of 4-H photography members who are pursuing a particular topic throughout the 4-H year. They began with writing a statement of purpose and methodology, and are documenting their progress through the photos they take. 4-H’ers pursuing this project will showcase one photo from their work that demonstrates their progress and topic of interest. These photos will be on display at the Holter Museum of Art, along with a short caption that describes the topic and project they are pursuing. A full description of this project is here >>
The “Photography with a Purpose” 4-H project will culminate in a physical item that demonstrates the results of their work. This will be judged and displayed at the 2024 Lewis & Clark County Fair. It might be something like a printed 2025 wall calendar, a scrapbook, a photo book or other photo-based item.

The Silverman Mansion is an historic home in Helena. It was built in 1890 by Morris Silverman, a Russian Jewish migrant. It is a three-story residence with a turret, pillars, intricate ornamentation, and beautiful stained glass. This house is designed in an eclectic Victorian style.
This is one home I am documenting as I explore some of the historic residences in Helena’s Mansion District. I hope to learn about their history and their achitecture. I will select 12 of my very best photos and display them in a 2025 wall calendar that I will exhibit at the 2024 Lewis & Clark County 4-H Fair.
