Statement of Purpose:
I want to document some of the famous homes of Helena’s Mansion District.
Methodology:
- I will photograph the mansions from different angles and see what works best for each house.
- I will photograph them at different times of day to see what looks the best.
- I will research and write up a little background on each mansion, like when it was built, who built it, what style of architecture it is, and any other interesting background.
- I will talk with a Helena-are historian or architect to get additional information for my project.
Outcome:
I will pick 12 of my very best photos, and print them as a 2025 wall calendar, and include information on each mansion.
We have many 4-H’ers who have participated in our Photography project for multiple years. This year, to keep things interesting, I’m proposing a deeper, more meaningful photography activity to pursue that will last throughout the 4-H year. For first year members, you can choose whether you want to join us with this new challenge, or follow the Photography Project Workbook to get a basic understanding of photography.
2024 Project: Photography with Purpose
This will be a challenge you pursue throughout the 4-H year. You decide what you want it to be about:
- Explore a topic or subject that is meaningful and important to you
- Express a message that you want to explore and communicate
- Pursue a topic that want to learn more about
- Document a story of discovery
To complete this project, you will
- Define your goals and write up a statement of purpose
- Research your topic and plan how you will do your work
- Take lots of photos
- Document your progress toward your goals
- Present your work and process through the Photo Show at the Holter Museum and exhibit your project at the County Fair
Examples of Photography with Purpose projects:
- Learn how to photograph the Milky Way
- Tell the story of therapy animals
- Explore Helena’s historic mansions
- Raising a pig in the 4-H swine project
